The City of Calgary recognized the need for additional multi-sport playing fields in Calgary. The Calgary Soccer Centre Annex was the solution to the growing demand for recreational practice space. The new facility consists of a pre-engineered structure with a total building area of approximately 92,000 square feet. The new building contains four indoor soccer fields. The fields are enclosed by netting and have moveable curtains to facilitate multi-purpose play. The facility includes related change facilities, public washrooms, a greeting counter, an elevator, viewing areas and areas for vending machines. A heated connection or link was also constructed between the existing soccer facility and the new annex building for visitors during cold months.
Williams Engineering Canada Inc. (WEC) provided engineering services from design through construction, which included: structural, mechanical, electrical and building envelope engineering.
It was determined during the planning phase of this project that lighting was a high priority. Field research indicated individuals and user groups of the soccer and sport complexes thought them to be dark. One of the main requests during design was to ensure the facility would be well lit and bright. To achieve this objective, our electrical design team used AGI.32 lighting software to calculate the lighting level following Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) and ASHRAE lighting standards. We designed above the recommended average lighting level using reduced lamp life factor to estimate lighting performance over a given period.
The goal for this project is to achieve LEED® Certification. LEED® requirements were at the forefront of the project teams design decisions, which included that rain water is retained on site in a storm water pond and reused for all site irrigation. Some additional choices include an energy efficient mechanical system, a bicycle rack constructed of recycled steel, selection of exterior lighting fixtures to ensure reduction of light pollution, as well as a green cleaning and green education component.
