Capitol Theatre in Fort Edmonton Park

Located in Fort Edmonton Park, the new Capitol Theatre blends modern construction with authentic elements and character from the original theatre that was constructed circa 1929. Williams Engineering was a key member of the building design team for the re-creation of this classic theatre and provided both mechanical and electrical services. The theatre was not only intended to be a historical replica of the original building but also a home for unique multi-media shows and a multi-purpose live venue.

Collaboration with historians, film producers, multi-media and audio-visual systems designers, Fort Edmonton Park staff, design architects, and other engineering design disciplines were crucial to the completion of this complex project. Many project partners were located internationally.

The project schedule followed a fast-track timeline. Coordination of the design intentions and details was paramount and was achieved through the collaborative use of a single, parametric building information model. All key design disciplines contributed in real-time to the development of this central model during design, and then it was used during construction by the contractors.

The Capitol Theatre delivers a one-of-a-kind, 4D entertainment experience and a dynamic venue for other live performances and events. The facility showcases approximately 1,250 m2 of developed floor area with a 250-seat audience chamber and a performance stage. A box office kiosk, an entrance lobby, back-stage areas, a projection room, equipment rooms, and special effects equipment spaces all support the show experience. Other service spaces include a full catwalk level above the audience chamber and stage, a mechanical room, an electrical room, storage, and egress corridors.

Since the theatre’s opening in the summer of 2011, it has been well-received as the newest and most dynamic addition to 1920 street in Fort Edmonton Park.
