Surrey Memorial Hospital Parkade and BC Ambulance Station

Williams Engineering (WE) completed the mechanical design and construction administration for the Surrey Memorial Hospital parkade and B.C. ambulance station, which included ventilation, drainage, and fire protection.

Working with the Lark Group and Wensley Architecture, the original parkade was demolished and replaced with a five-level parkade with four underground levels. The 250,000-square-foot parkade also incorporates an 8,400-square-foot B.C. ambulance station into the top level. The Lark Group maintained the full hospital parking operation during construction by completing a five-storey underground parkade across the street as part of the City Centre One office building, for which WEC also provided mechanical engineering services.

The structure of the parkade incorporated post-tensioned concrete slabs, which reduced concrete depth and volume, but required increased team coordination to avoid post-tensioning cables. To improve coordination and constructability, the parkade was fully designed using Revit 3D software. The B.C. ambulance station included an indoor-heated nine-ambulance vehicle parking bay, staff living quarters, multipurpose rooms, and office spaces and was designed to the BC Ambulance Stations Design Standards.

The minimized visibility of the parkade enhanced the entry appearance of the hospital and operational efficiency.
