Nowhere in the world is more development occurring at this moment than China. The most populous nation on earth has undergone a miraculous shift – from a patchwork agrarian society to a united, industrialized, and highly prosperous nation.

The industrialization has had its drawbacks, however; though China is endowed with copious coal energy resources, coal is not a clean burning fuel source. As a result of coal use, the air quality in urban centres has suffered. The Chinese government has taken a proactive approach to solving the problem by restructuring utilities that pollute excessively.

Our firm was proud to have contributed in part to the state-of-the-art Taiyuan City central heating project, which ultimately would bring hot water heating to 31,000 households and a large number of public spaces, such as schools, banks, and hospitals. The scale of this project may have been daunting for some: it required a completely new design, involving 26 km of buried, pre-insulated pipeline across five regional districts, which had to be installed without drastically disturbing traffic; pumps, automated valve systems, instrumentation, and a PLC control system; three new high-efficiency boilers; and a host of pollution reduction mechanisms. Each component is linked to an automated central control, which allows the system to run efficiently and safely. The new boilers, which replace nine old ones and innumerable household heating devices, are equipped with scrubbers and pollution control equipment to improve air quality and the health of Chinese citizens by removing an estimated 180 tons of sulphur dioxide and 750 tons of dust from the air in Taiyuan City. We supplied designs and equipment for 41 heat exchangers that were incorporated into the central heating system.

Our firm jumped at the opportunity to work overseas with new clients, applying new techniques to improve the Taiyuan infrastructure and safeguard the environment for future generations. Williams Engineering Canada Inc. is committed to providing innovative engineering solutions both at home and abroad.
