To enhance the federal government’s presence in the City of Yellowknife, a plan for a Government of Canada Building was put into place in 2002. Using LEED® guidelines, the building provides healthy and energy efficient components that align within a typical Yellowknife commercial building construction budget. Williams provided structural and mechanical engineering design services for the first North of 60 LEED® Canada-Gold certified office building.
Built in 1983, the Talisman Centre is locally known as an iconic building on the Calgary, Alberta skyline. Owned by the City of Calgary and operated by Lindsey Park Sports Society, the Talisman Centre boasts more than just five full-sized gymnasiums for local residents.
On behalf of Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) in the spring of 2008, Williams conducted a conceptual options heating study for the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Cereal Research Centre’s Science Laboratory building, located on the University of Manitoba campus in Winnipeg.
Artists for Kids (AFK) was established in 1989 by the North Vancouver School District, with support from various Canadian artists. Located at the Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art, AFK’s mission is to build an art education legacy for the children of British Columbia through the sale of art prints. There are several enriching programs offered for children of all ages at AFK, including summer camps, workshops and the Paradise Valley Summer School of Visual Art. AFK provides scholarships for students from North Vancouver schools, as well as raises funds for community programs and AFK School.
Aspen Heights Elementary School located in Red Deer, Alberta was originally constructed in 1949. The school's current population stands at approximately 225 students. Major renovations to the school and a four classroom addition began in June of 2009.
This project involved overlaying approximately 5,000 tonnes of asphalt concrete pavement within Red Deer County. A section of the overlays was undertaken in the busy Gasoline Alley industrial subdivision area near the city of Red Deer. The County of Red Deer required the expertise to identify areas that required deep strengthening within their road network. The areas of importance were the industrial subdivisions. The heavy truck traffic that is generated shortens the life of a roadway if it was not designed for the heavy truck traffic.
The Atlantic Art Block adds character to Calgary’s artsy Inglewood community.
Located on the east edge of downtown Calgary, the Atlantic Avenue Art Block is a four-storey retail, office, and art gallery building complete with underground and surface parking. The new facility boasts a sleek, modern design with hints of inspiration from the community’s historical setting. The building also incorporates many LEED® design components and has achieved LEED® Silver certification.
Beginning in 2001, the Canadian Rockies School Division required major remodeling of the Banff Community High School. The new 5,960 m2, two-storey school includes junior high and high school classrooms, a visual arts shop, an art workshop, a construction technology shop, computer labs, administration offices, and a community gymnasium.
Williams Engineering Canada Inc. undertook detailed design and construction management for the realignment of Bunt Lake Trail and Poplar Ridge Road. The north-south legs of the Burnt Lake Trail were off-set by 5 m (east to west). This was becoming a serious concern due to increased traffic associated with a rise in industrial and commercial usage in the area. Williams Engineering redesigned the intersection to accommodate heavy truck traffic and improve the flow of vehicles through the Burnt Lake Trail Industrial Park.
As many Canadians are using email and social media for communicating, what changes does Canada Post need to implement to ensure it continues to meet the demands of Canadians and fulfill its purpose of providing Canadians with world-class postal service? The answer is Canada Post's "Building the Modern Post" initiative.
Capital Health, serving over one million Edmonton and area patients, provides various high technology services including organ transplants, inpatient acute care, rehabilitation care, extended care, and immunizations. Capital Health required the expertise of an engineering firm to guide the deconstruction of the existing Outpatient Resident Building located at 8315 – 114 Street in Edmonton Alberta.
Located in Fort Edmonton Park, the new Capitol Theatre blends modern construction with authentic elements and character from the original theatre that was constructed circa 1929. WEC was a key member of the building design team for the re-creation of this classic theatre and provided both mechanical and electrical services.
As the largest rural school division in Alberta, Chinook’s Edge School Division provides public schooling for 41 schools and approximately 11,000 students. The division supports over 600 teachers as well as hundreds of substitute teachers and support staff while ensuring each student’s educational experience is a fulfilling one that includes challenging and meaningful learning opportunities.
The Crystal Pool, owned by the City of Victoria and built in 1969, has stood the test of time with minimal maintenance upgrades over its 45-year lifespan. This is in part due to the quality of design and also the quality of the original systems and equipment. Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) provided electrical and mechanical systems designs to modernize the aging aquatic centre.
The Civil team at Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) conducted a study of the existing road system in Dettah, N.W.T., a community of just over 200 people located on the shore of Great Slave Lake. Dettah, previously known as Burnt Point, has been a traditional Dene fish camp for hundreds of years with hunting, trapping and fishing dominating the local economy. In the summer, Dettah is a 27-kilometre drive accessible by an all-weather road from Yellowknife, while in the winter, a six-kilometre ice road across the Yellowknife Bay provides access to Dettah.
WEC provided complete mechanical and electrical designs for the Dow Centennial Centre, which includes an ice arena; an indoor soccer pitch, complete with spectator area and locker/shower room; a raised running track; a fitness centre and gym complete with locker/shower facilities; a community auditorium and banquet room with kitchen, washrooms, and storage area; and a pottery and art studio.
WEC has built upon a long-standing relationship with École Allain St-Cyr that began in 1998 to provide engineering design and consultation services. During the initial phase of the project, WEC provided structural and electrical engineering design and construction services for the new French language school in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. École Allain St-Cyr was a significant opportunity for our engineers to be as creative as possible; this resulted in a modern, innovative, and cost-effective design that met the needs of the client and the community.
The Islamic Academy of Edmonton is a triumph of collaboration that provides traditional education with modern sensibility for more than 1,000 students from kindergarten to grade twelve. Williams and Barr Ryder Architects and Interior Designers worked together as prime consultants to design and build an institution that is functional, beautiful, and representative of Canada’s multi-cultural spirit.
Williams Engineering’s team will once again be visiting the Edmonton Valley Zoo as a new and exciting project gets underway. The project, Nature’s Wild Backyard is a child-friendly multi-zoned area which will support animal homes and habitats. The project will include interactive displays, exhibits, the all important Parent’s Café, and a new area named Nature’s Wild Hospital, where children can pretend to be a veterinarian or a zoo keeper. The different exhibits will be themed around forest, grassland, farm, and wetland critters.
Williams Engineering Canada (WEC), as sub-consultant to PSAV Architects Ltd., was awarded engineering schematic design services for a new health centre in Fort Providence, Northwest Territories. This health centre was the first to be built based on the new Integrated Service Delivery Model (ISDM) for health and social service programs in the communities.
Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) was the building envelope consultant for the modernization of G.H. Dawe Community Centre and Library for Red Deer Recreation Parks and Culture. The modernization included building envelope and re-roofing services. While participating in that project, Red Deer Public Schools became involved and Williams provided the same services for a new gymnasium and classrooms at G.H. Dawe School located on the same site.
Williams Engineering was retained to conduct Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) at four specific locations in the Northwest Territories. The Purpose of the Phase II ESAs was to identify any potential environment liabilities and concerns at the subject site and the adjacent properties.
Specifically, the Phase II ESAs were focused on the following buildings:
- Old Chief Albert Wright School; Tulita
- De Cho Hall; Fort Simpson
- The Leisure Lounge; Fort Smith
- The Old Weigh Scale; Enterprise
Great Slave Helicopters (GSH) is one of Canada’s most well-known air transportation providers. With base locations across Canada, GSH provides a variety of helicopter services to a wide range of industries and agencies. Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) provided engineering services for the Springbank Airport facility of Great Slave Helicopters.
After 25 years since its last major renovation, the Jasper Place Library in Edmonton, Alberta was in need of a fresh new look. The hard facade of faded red and brown bricks had long outgrown this west-end community that has been working so hard to revitalize itself, but still maintain its old-style charm and history.
The Hamlet of Kugluktuk draws its water from the Coppermine River about 2.5 km upstream from the Coronation Gulf. Numerous issues have been reported with the water system over the years including chronic excessive turbidity, seasonal salt water intrusion, sand and silt build-up around the intake pipe, the need for a new intake pump house (instability of the riverbank lead to damage of the intake pump house and pipe), and sufficient water storage. Many of these issues are interrelated (i.e., intake sedimentation affecting water quality).
Meadows Community Recreation Centre and Meadows Library is a 20,900-square-metre facility which includes an aquatic complex, twin-sheet ice arena, a gymnasium, a two-level fitness area with an indoor track, community multipurpose rooms, and a 1400-square-metre branch library for the Edmonton Public Library. Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) was selected to provide mechanical, electrical and civil consulting engineering services to this $91 million facility. The building is targeting LEED® Silver certification as mandated by the City of Edmonton.
The striking new Mill Woods Library, Seniors and Multicultural Facility is a two-storey, dual functioning facility that consists of over 50,000-square-feet of total floor area. The facility operated by the City of Edmonton contains a 25,000-square-foot library located on the main floor, which features quiet rooms, over 45 public computer stations, a youth area, a children’s area, a multipurpose community space, an interactive “maker space”, and staff administration and support spaces. The Seniors and Multicultural Centre on the second floor includes a large multipurpose program space, a program room, an arts room, meeting rooms, a full commercial and catering kitchen, a dining area, a games room, and administrative space. Together, the two functional programs have been unified into a single community hub.
Northgate Transit Centre is a busy bus terminal servicing thousands of Edmonton commuters daily. Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) participated in the replacement of the terminal that features expanded indoor waiting areas, new public and ETS driver washrooms, a security office, and a new leasable kiosk space. The redevelopment of the station strikes a balance between artful design and functionality while utilizing an open concept. Building Information Modeling software and collaboration strategies were used throughout the design and construction of the project.
The recent population explosion in Alberta has necessitated rapid expansion of local infrastructure. Schools to support the demographic bulge promised by a young community are absolutely necessary to the future success of the province. In order to plan ahead and ensure Alberta’s children are given every opportunity to excel, 18 new schools were constructed in the province’s two most populous cities, Edmonton and Calgary.
The $6.5-million Queen Elizabeth outdoor swimming pool is a completely new replacement of a historic but outdated aquatic facility that has served the residents and children of Edmonton since 1922. Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) was proud to provide electrical engineering services for this much anticipated summer outdoor recreation facility.
Williams Engineering Canada was retained to provide preliminary engineering, detailed design, tendering services, construction management services, and post construction services for the grading improvements of Ribstone Road (approximately 15 km in length). This project has been designed and awarded for construction to commence. It is anticipated that the construction of this roadway be completed in the Spring of 2010.
The drainage swale collects storm water runoff from the roadway and adjacent escarpments and discharges at the base of the hill into a small creek. A site investigation and investigative report concluded that approximately 400 m of the drainage swale, commencing at the top of the hill, consisted of a failing geo-textile liner and washed aggregate conglomerate.

The City of Yellowknife's Somba K'e Civic Plaza is a prominent landmark in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and is located next door to City Hall. An alluring attraction for visitors, this plaza features an amphitheater with a view across from the scenic Frame Lake, a maintenance support building, sculptural areas, and a large green space. Williams Engineering Canada is very proud to have taken part in the structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering aspects of this project for Nadji Architects.
The Southridge Emergency Services building in Okotoks, Alberta provides space for the fire department, RCMP, and civic emergency services. The project is now complete and is recognized as a LEED® Gold certified building. The project was a competitive design-build that emphasized sustainable design measures that would significantly reduce life cycle costs for the Town of Okotoks. Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) partnered with IBI Group to ensure our design took advantage of a high-performance building envelope and superior lighting efficiency.
Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) provided structural, mechanical and electrical consulting engineering services for the Sunwest hangar and terminal building located at the south end of the Calgary International Airport in Calgary, AB. The new, approximately $25-million Sunwest terminal and hangar is comprised of a four-hangar airport, terminal, cafeteria and office space. One of the three bays was designed to accommodate private planes and the other three will be used for passenger and cargo planes.
Local and international students at the University of Calgary truly get a taste of premium student living while participating in programs geared towards increasing cultural, global, and local awareness.
Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) provided structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering and consulting for this project with Nadji Architects for the Government of the Northwest Territories. Work involved designing, tendering and construction services for the new 250-square-metre single-storey air terminal and CARS (Community Airport Radio Station) office building to replace the existing, aging infrastructure. This will be the sole air terminal building to service the Tuktoyaktuk community of approximately 870 people.
Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) was awarded the project management contract by the Hamlet of Tulita in March 2014. The project included the design and construction of a 6000 square foot office, council chamber and cultural centre. As the project manager, WEC assisted in the development of the building program, aided in the procurement of modular systems, and reviewed designs prior to construction.
Williams Engineering acted as the Prime Consultant and supplied mechanical and electrical design services for the upgrade of the University of British Columbia Okanagan’s (UBCO) Central Heating Plant. The project was undertaken in order to provide utility cost savings, maintenance savings, and savings on carbon emissions of approximately 140 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually.
Williams Engineering supplied mechanical engineering services for a $1.2 million laboratory space fit-up at the University of Lethbridge. Williams Engineering also acted as the prime consultant. The new laboratory space in the basement of the Life Sciences Building became the Aquatic Research Facility. Integral to the design were the following features:
Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) was selected as the mechanical engineering consultants for the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Inpatient Bed Project. This project is an extension of a previously built shell space, established in 2009. Levels six and seven of the existing health care tower are to be fitted with 64 patient beds to accommodate local community health care needs. At the time the Interior Health Authority had a shortage of short and long stay beds in the Central Okanagan.
Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) provided structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering services for the design-build project at the Yellowknife Airport of the Combined Services Building (CSB). The CSB is largely a pre-engineered steel building. The foundations and floor system consist of reinforced concrete foundation beams and slab on grade that is designed for heavy industrial loading.
Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) provided mechanical, electrical and structural engineering services for the renovations of Yellowknife’s City Hall lobby, Council Chamber, and reception to the Mayor’s office. Yellowknife's City Hall is centrally located in the downtown core along Frame Lake. The lobby was renovated to provide a safe, secure, functional, and aesthetically appealing central area for the interaction of residents with the city for many of the in-person services available at City Hall.
Williams Engineering Canada (WEC) provided significant consulting services for the Yellowknife Multiplex, which houses a mixture of gymnasiums, gymnastics facilities, ice arenas, and shower rooms for each activity, totaling 9,523 square metres.
