Diwan Pavilion at the Aga Khan Garden

Overlooking the Aga Khan Garden, the Diwan Pavilion is the newest indoor community pavilion at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden. The beautiful limestone facility reflects the heritage of Islamic architecture and design, intended to be a gathering place to share culture through musical performances, lectures, exhibits and various community events. This majestic venue is also available for year-round bookings for private events, such as weddings, celebrations, conferences or galas.

Williams Engineering (WE) provided mechanical and electrical engineering services for this two-storey new construction project. The plumbing, heating and cooling, ventilation and control systems were designed by WE’s mechanical team. Main building power and lighting services were designed by WE’s electrical team in addition to the security and access control infrastructure, fire alarm layout, power distribution and voice and data infrastructure. Energy modelling services were provided to support the validation of the design and demonstrate compliance with building code requirements during the building permit submission. WE provided documents required for the tender phase of the project and various construction administration services, such as site reviews during the building’s construction.

A key focal point for community and visitor interaction, the Diwan Pavilion fosters a deep understanding amongst people of all cultures and symbolizes inclusion, peace and unity. The building provides a connection to nature and human spirit while educating visitors of all ages on diverse perspectives and values.
