University of Alberta Enterprise Square

Enterprise Square, located in downtown Edmonton, Alberta, is a research and education hub within the University of Alberta; to utilize their existing spaces more effectively and with purpose, the University identified the need to renovate the building’s main floor with the goal of constructing open and flexible workspaces intended to support collaboration and engagement throughout the University’s community. Construction on Phase One was completed in August of 2021, and construction. Following completion of Phase One, the design team was then engaged to provide consulting and construction administration services for Phase Two which involved renovations to the third floor of the same building.

For Phase One, Williams Engineering (WE) provided mechanical and electrical consulting engineering services. The project scope included designing for an open kitchen, dining area and atrium. Flexible workstations and breakout meeting rooms offer new spaces to collaborate and focus.

Phase Two included five zones, as well as additional design for two new all gender washrooms, and relocation of janitor rooms.

Following a thorough review of existing services related to relevant systems of the renovation, WE’s mechanical team provided designs for plumbing, heating and ventilation systems. Distribution, data, fire alarm, security and lighting systems were designed by the electrical team. Encompassing six separate zones within the main floor of Enterprise Square including five open office and meeting room spaces as well as one common gathering zone. To minimize disruption to end users, the zones were phased in both design and construction.

With construction now complete, Enterprise Square has been welcoming new tenants to its functional and dynamic space in downtown Edmonton which will brighten the lives of students and faculty while fostering research, learning and partnership.
