Foothills Country Hospice Expansion

Foothills Country Hospice is a care facility that provides bereavement support and grief counseling. Spanning 13,500 square feet, the hospice is situated 1.5 km north of Okotoks on an 8-acre property, offering stunning views of the mountains. This project involves the construction of a two-story wood-frame building to expand the available residential hospice space.

Williams Engineering (WE) provided our electrical, mechanical, structural and energy modelling engineering consulting services throughout the duration of the renovation & building construction. Our multi-disciplinary team first conducted reviews to assess the condition of the existing electrical and mechanical systems. The electrical team prepared working drawings for power, communications, lighting and life safety systems. The residential suite lighting was designed as per RP-28 – Lighting and Visual Environment for older Adults and the Visually Impaired.

The mechanical team provided designs for the new mechanical systems, including the HVAC and plumbing systems, natural gas service, water distribution system, sanitary drainage, storm water drainage, fire protection, and building controls. We also provided the prescriptive design and drawings for the fire protection systems. Our structural team provided designs related to the foundation system, basement floor, elevated structural floors, roof framing and walls, and the exterior canopies, parapets and associated features.

Lastly, our team provided energy modelling services which included a review of the addition drawings to determine compliance targets. The development of a reference building model was completed to compare relative energy performance of the anticipated design to the applicable benchmark. The modelling of overall energy performance was completed as per the 2017 National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB 2017).

The modern design elements and updated feature will help support the facilities mission of embracing quality in living, compassion in death, and support in bereavement to the Foothills community.
