Located in one of the fastest growing areas in South Surrey, British Columbia, Hazelwood is a new development of 152-family-style townhomes built on ten acres of land by Hungerford Properties. The project successfully exceeded the City of Surrey’s infrastructure and environmental requirements for new residential developments, aiming to have a positive impact on the surrounding natural environment. 2.7 acres of accessible open public space and over five acres of trails are included in the development, providing and protecting a habitat corridor in the community. Another goal of the project was to retain the existing trees and vegetation on the site, in addition to plating over 380 new trees to achieve excellent environmental benefits throughout Hazelwood. In 2023, the project won an Award of Excellence in the Multi-Family Town Home Category at the Fraser Valley Commercial Building Awards.
Williams Engineering (WE) provided mechanical engineering consulting services for the Hazelwood townhome development. The project includes 152 units throughout 23 buildings designed with ten unique layouts. The mechanical design included plumbing systems, heating ventilation systems and plumbing service designs for the plumbing fixtures and roof drainage. The suites are heated using electric baseboard heaters and exhaust systems utilize energy recovery ventilation to meet Energy Code requirements. Mechanical equipment for the development was coordinated between WE and the electrical consultant.
Emphasizing environmental preservation and sustainability is crucial in extensive projects such as Hazelwood within the construction industry. Williams Engineering takes pride in collaborating with Hungerford Properties on this significant project.
