Peter Lougheed Centre – Emergency Department Renovations

Following the completion of the Medical Devise Repurposing Department (MDRD) renovations in 2022, Williams Engineering (WE) has provided structural engineering design and construction phase services for various additional renovations to the Peter Lougheed Centre. These renovations include the Mental Health Short Stay Unit (MHSSU), Rapid Response Laboratory (RRL), Minor Surgeries Women’s Health & Bronchoscopy (MSWHB), Psychiatric High Observation Unit (PHOU), ICU Offices and the Emergency Department relocation and renovations. Included in this project was structural support for laboratory equipment, new floor and roof penetrations and support for medical lighting and surgery equipment. A substantial renovation to exterior landscaping elements was also included.

As part of the renovations new, large scale mechanical air handling equipment was installed on the roof of the original power plant and required a new structural steel support frame and structural steel support for new exterior duct work to service the renovated areas of the hospital. Support for new mechanical equipment on the roof of the 6th floor was designed, including new exterior ductwork support.

The project was completed continuously over several years and several phases to insure full hospital operations continued during construction. Attention was also paid to methods of construction to cause the least disturbance as possible to sensitive areas of the hospital. The structural portion of the renovations were substantially complete in early 2025.
