Pond Inlet Women’s Shelter

Pond Inlet, NU has opened a new shelter to help bridge the gap in health services for women and girls. A vacant 4,250 ft2 existing building was renovated to include 4 bedrooms with ensuites, 2 general washrooms, an office, a laundry room, a mechanical room, a playroom for children and a kitchen/dining area.

Williams Engineering (WE) provided our mechanical and electrical consulting engineering services for this project. Our multi-disciplinary team reviewed the existing services in relation to the requirements of the renovation. Our mechanical team provided designs for the updated plumbing, HVAC systems and fire protection systems. Our electrical engineering team reviewed the distribution system modifications to suit the new design and provided designs for the updated lighting systems, auxiliary power, communications systems, fire alarm and the security system infrastructure.

Lastly, WE provided our construction administration services for the renovation. This included the preparation of working drawings & project specifications prior to construction. Throughout the duration of construction, our team reviewed the shop drawing and provided the client, other consultants, and the contractors with interpretation of the contract documents.

This shelter is the first of its kind in Pond Inlet, NU and it will house women and their young children, as well as girls who have left dangerous situations at home, for up to six weeks. This shelter is a much-needed addition to support women and girls in the community.
