Red Chris Mine is located in British Columbia’s “Golden Triangle,” a 500-kilometer-long belt containing one of the planet’s densest concentrations of minerals, including copper, silver and its namesake mineral, gold. The open-pit mine operates using conventional truck and shovel methods, producing a significant amount of copper-gold concentrate. Operated by a joint venture between Newcrest Mining and Imperial Metals, construction on the project began in 2012 and has since created approximately 500 construction jobs and 300 operational jobs for British Columbia.
Williams Engineering (WE) provided electrical and mechanical engineering services for the complete renovation of the dining hall at Red Chris Mine. Plumbing and electrical tie-in coordination was required to service the new kitchen area, adjacent to the new dining hall and was designed by others. Additionally, a full review of the life safety systems, including emergency lights, exit signs and the fire alarm system, was conducted for the active camp area. New layouts were completed to upgrade these systems to meet the latest building codes. Mechanical and electrical engineering services were also provided for the construction drawings package of the new core building located at the mine. Plumbing systems, HVAC, dust collection coordination, lighting and power system designs were all provided by WE’s project team in compliance with all applicable codes.
Engaging closely with the entire consultant team ensured the completion of this project stayed within the tight and challenging timeline. WE’s group of experts addressed each design concern and deficiency promptly, providing the most cost-effective design solutions possible. With an anticipated 28-year lifespan, Red Chris Mine is an inspiring example of a variety of economic opportunities to come for the communities of British Columbia.
