The TransLink SkyTrain Operations and Maintenance Centre is located in Burnaby, British Columbia and is operated by the British Columbia Rapid Transit Company (BCRTC). Originally constructed in 1985, this large industrial facility houses the fleet and provides space and equipment for minor and major maintenance work required for the vehicles. In addition, the central control systems for the Millennium and Expo lines are located within the facility.
Working with Chernoff Thompson Architects, Williams Engineering (WE) provided mechanical and electrical consulting engineering services for the renovation of approximately 8,500 square feet of office space located on the second floor of the Operations and Maintenance Centre. New mechanical systems, including HVAC, were designed for the renovated area, and the existing plumbing and fire suppression systems were adapted to service the new space. WE’s electrical team designed the new lighting system and re-configured the existing power systems to be re-used throughout the facility. Our teams provided cost-effective, innovative solutions from the design stage through to construction completion, coordinating with project stakeholders and contractors to ensure timelines were met.
The SkyTrain currently features seventeen stations and connects downtown Vancouver with Burnaby, Port Moody, Surrey, Richmond, Coquitlam and New Westminster. As these cities see population increases, the road networks are expected to continue to grow, furthering the need for operations and maintenance infrastructure with the capabilities for existing and future service needs. A critical component of the Lower Mainland’s transportation system, the SkyTrain will eventually serve many more communities as an effective and sustainable alternative means of transportation.
