Located in the community of Acadia in south Calgary, Alberta, the Acadia Aquatic and Fitness Centre was originally constructed in the 1960’s. The facility features an indoor six-lane pool with two water slides, a weight room, a cardio room, a fitness studio and a multi-purpose room. Various programs are housed in the facility, including personal training, Calgary AfterSchool, and various school programs such as skating lessons and arts.
Partnering with Kasian Architecture, Williams Engineering (WE) provided the structural, electrical, mechanical, and building envelope consulting engineering services for the lifecycle renovation at the Acadia Aquatic & Fitness Centre. WE’s building science team completed an assessment of the exterior building envelope and roofing systems on the northwest corner of the facility to address drainage issues and delaminating of the building envelope. The indoor air-handling unit (AHU) for the pool, original to the facility’s construction in the 1960s, required replacement as it had reached its end of useful service life. The building also required an interior lighting upgrade, including the pool, washrooms, change rooms, common area hallway, lobby and administrative spaces. The lighting throughout the facility was upgraded from T12, T8 and T5 to LEDs. WE’s structural team completed an assessment of the metal channel pillars and corrosion on the columns.
Lifecycle renovations to existing infrastructure provide a holistic approach to ensure buildings operate as intended and reduce energy use wherever possible. The renovations and upgrades completed at the Acadia Aquatic and Fitness Centre empower the building owners to make informed decisions about their facilities, resulting in higher performing buildings for the community.
