Located in Edmonton, Alberta, the ACT Aquatic and Recreation Centre is a community facility featuring a 25-metre gradual depth swimming pool, whirlpool, and multiple waterslides. The building also houses a gymnasium, outdoor tennis courts, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, volleyball courts and playgrounds. The City of Edmonton identified the need for extensive rehabilitation to address components of the building that had reached their end of service life.
Alongside the Marc Boutin Architectural Collaborative Inc. (MBAC), Williams Engineering (WE) provided mechanical and electrical engineering consulting services for the ACT Aquatic and Recreational Centre. The scope of this rehabilitation project included replacements of various mechanical and electrical components of the facility. WE’s mechanical team developed designs for replacing the expansion tanks, pneumatic control, water filtration equipment, radiation heaters and domestic hot water heaters. Air handling units, exhaust fans and ductwork were replaced in the pool mechanical room. The electrical scope included replacements of the main switch gear, transformer, switchboards, and panel boards. During this rehabilitation, the lighting throughout the facility was upgraded to LED, resulting in cost savings and decreased energy use.
This rehabilitation results in improved accessibility, safety and sustainability of the entire facility and will reduce future repair costs by upgrading these major systems. Having reopened in the spring of 2023, this facility will continue to be a collaborative and inclusive space for residents and visitors to enjoy.
