Located in downtown Calgary, Alberta, Legacy on 5th Avenue is a 74-unit residential apartment building for single adults consisting of nine above-ground stories and a single-level below grade concrete foundation. Made possible by generous donations from the RESOLVE Campaign, the Government of Canada through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and the City of Calgary, HomeSpace Society committed to this project in an effort to increase affordable housing in Calgary due to the current lack of accessible options.
Williams Engineering (WE) provided building envelope consulting services for the construction of this development. The building science team efficiently worked alongside the architect and developer to review the drawings and provide mark-ups, comments and recommendations related to the building envelope and roofing. Working closely with the architect, general contractor, and sub-trades, WE reviewed critical details, discussed sequencing between several trades, and worked with various construction and design teams to ensure a durable and sustainable building envelope solution was constructed.
Construction on Legacy was completed in February of 2021. HomeSpace Society currently receives referrals for potential tenants of Legacy on 5th Avenue and is supported by several local social service partners including Autism Calgary Association, Vecova, Calgary Seniors’ Resource Society and New Age Services. A durable and sustainable building envelope ensures Legacy can deliver safe, accessible and affordable housing for Calgary’s vulnerable communities and creates a lasting impact to address the ongoing affordable housing crisis.
