P3 Schools

To support the recent population increase in Alberta, 18 new schools were constructed in Edmonton and Calgary.

Williams Engineering (WE) designed six different school models that were adapted for all 18 projects. These schools achieved 58% better energy savings on average over MNECB and 45% water savings. All equipment was selected to maximize the lifecycle cost of the facility.

Each facility was designed with a thermal displacement ventilation, heat recovery, and demand control with carbon dioxide sensors. Construction and operation of the schools will be funded through a public private partnership (P3), and after 30 years, the facilities will be turned over to the government.

Preliminary design work for these high-quality, long-lasting, and innovative schools commenced in September 2007 and construction was completed in June 2010. With regional offices in both cities, WE provided mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering designs for all 18 schools, each of which have achieved LEED® Silver or Gold certification.
