What is Lighting Design?
Lighting design is a collaboration between the electrical engineer, architect, interior designer, and owner. As lighting designers, we select fixtures that not only provide adequate light to the space but fit the space’s aesthetic and style. Lighting can easily transform a space from being open and airy to intimate and tender.
Our Lighting Design Process
Williams Engineering has a team of lighting engineers and specialists that can provide detailed specialty lighting design for all your project needs.
- First, fixtures are chosen and modeled using a lighting design software like AGI32, Dialux and/or Revit. We can then 3D render what the space will look like, assess the lighting levels, shadowing, and glare. We want to make sure that space is not just bright, but comfortable. Often, we go through multiple design iterations, selecting alternate fixtures or orienting the fixtures differently to achieve the light levels and space concept.
- Following the selection process, our team focuses on how the lighting will be controlled. Lighting controls allow not only energy savings via occupancy and vacancy sensors but also for individual control via dimming. The ability to change lighting levels also allows for enhanced comfort as well as to change the look and feel of a space over the course of a day.
- During construction, we assess the appearance of the fixtures and lighting levels to ensure they match the design. We want to make sure our design meets all requirements and have gone to great lengths to measure light levels accurately including taking a paddleboard out to the middle of a pool or climbing an indoor cycle track.
