Edmonton’s southeast Valley Line light rail transit (LRT) system runs approximately 13 kilometers from the downtown core to Mill Woods and encompasses 11 street-level passenger stops. Construction on Edmonton’s LRT network is currently underway with the goal of reducing car traffic, resulting in lowered emissions from the city. The Gerry Wright Operations and Maintenance Facility is an essential component of the complete transit network, providing an industrial space where the LRT vehicles are serviced, cleaned, maintained and stored in addition to monitoring the overall operations of the Valley Line.
Williams Engineering (WE) provided building envelope consulting services on this new construction project. Thorough reviews of the building envelope and roofing details were completed on the architectural design at the 90% Issued for Construction phase of the drawings. This review included identifying the thermal bridges, continuity of vapour, weather and air barrier systems. Building envelope and roofing reviews were conducted during the construction of the TPO thermoplastic roof to ensure compliance with the specifications and ARCA standards. WE also produced building envelope commissioning documentation to comply with the LEED Canada Reference Guide for Green Building Design and Construction. In addition, WE also provided confirmation testing through the use of infrared thermography. This project was designed to meet LEED Silver certification requirements.
The Gerry Wright Operations and Maintenance Facility provides much-needed capacity for the Valley Line LRT’s current and future transportation requirements. This project allows the City of Edmonton to commit to its impressive sustainability and emission reduction targets by providing thoughtful, efficient LRT networks to its community as an ideal alternative to individual vehicle use.
