Williams Engineering Visits Eureka, NU!

September 26, 2024

Eureka is a small research base on Fosheim Peninsula, Ellesmere Island, Qikiqtaaluk Region, in Nunavut. It is the third-northernmost permanent research community in the world.  Eureka, NU is almost exactly on the 80th parallel north.  It is 10 degrees (1100 kilometers) south of the North Pole.

While there is a lot going on in Eureka, no one lives there full time. It is just a research facility / weather station! This is an outpost for the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) in Cambridge Bay, NU. The facility supports various scientific projects focused on Arctic climate, weather patterns, and environmental changes.

WE are completing a project in Eureka! This is the farthest north, and one of the most remote locations that Williams Engineering has been.

Our very own Bryan Yawney got to visit Eureka to complete field observations for our project. This was done in association with ATCO Frontec. Like many of us, Bryan was not familiar with Eureka, Nunavut prior to this project. The furthest north he had been prior to this trip was right on the edge of the artic circle (which is still pretty far!!) This trip allowed Bryan to familiarize himself with Eureka and its role in research and weather tracking! This also helps us expand our knowledge and explore the communities that Williams Engineering works in.

The project reinforces our core purpose of engineering spaces that are safe, inclusive, and resilient. It highlights our role in developing innovative solutions to meet the unique demands of different environments, especially ones as unique and remote as Eureka!
